Is a mortgage broker course for you?
If you’re looking to become a mortgage broker in Australia or take your broking business to the next level in 2025, you’re in the right place. As someone who came from outside the finance industry to build a thriving mortgage broking business, I know how important it is to choose the right training and education.
Whether you’re a newcomer working toward your Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking, or an experienced broker looking to expand their horizons with a Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management, this list of mortgage broker courses includes the most reputable mortgage broker courses in Australia today.
What qualifications does a mortgage broker need?
If you want a start a career in mortgage broking, choose a course that gets you the qualifications recognised by the industry.
There are loads of finance courses, but only two mortgage broker courses specifically designed to get you the qualifications you need to be a successful broker. You need either a Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking (FNS40821) or a Diploma of Finance and Mortgage Broking Management (FNS50322).
These qualifications are recognised by the industry regulator ASIC, and can be considered your ticket to a career as a mortgage broker.
Do you need any background knowledge?
One of the advantages to these mortgage broker courses is they enable a quick start in mortgage broking. The mortgage broker courses that can get you qualified as a mortgage broker don’t need any background knowledge or qualifications—just a curiosity about how money works.
Knowing a little excel and high school maths will go a long way here.
Mortgage broker course – Learning options
There are heaps of Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) in Australia offering mortgage broking courses. Each with their own unique course delivery formats. Some offer interactive learning and others strictly 100% online. Here are some learning options you might see.

Get together virtually with other students and be guided through the content by an experienced facilitator. Often a good way to start while you finish the course off online.

Frequent tutoring
Tutoring in groups or one-to-one is included for some courses and a bolt-on extra fee for others. Either way regular check-ins can keep you accountable and on track.
Other requirements to being a broker
I go through these in my article describing how I became a mortgage broker having come from a completely different industry.
- Get the qualifications.
- Do the checks – Police and Credit checks.
- Join and industry body – commonly MFAA or FBAA.
- Join a business or start your own with appropriate support.
- Choose an Aggregator – you should talk with one now. Before you start studying.
